Pacific Islands Trademarks & Intellectual Property

Filing Across the Pacific

Cromptons Solicitors acts as local agent for overseas intellectual property firms and brand owners filing across the Pacific. From our Suva office we handle trademark and IP work in Fiji and, through established local channels, in Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu.

Overseas firms instruct us because the Pacific is not one jurisdiction. Each country runs its own register, its own forms and its own timetables, and few are served by online filing portals. A single regional brand rollout can mean six separate filings, six sets of local requirements and six renewal dates to track. We are the single point of contact that manages all of it.

Where We File

We act on trademark and intellectual property matters in Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu.

Fiji is our home jurisdiction and the one we know best — our Fiji trademark and IP services are set out in full on our Trademarks and IP page. For the other Pacific registers we work through established local channels, so you deal with one firm and one file rather than six.

What We Handle

Availability searches before you commit to a mark.

New applications and prosecution through to registration.

Renewals, with dates diarised so nothing lapses.

Recordals — assignments, changes of name and address, and licences.

Oppositions and responses to registry objections.

Enforcement, including infringement, passing off and Customs matters.

Portfolio management for clients holding marks across several Pacific jurisdictions.

Working With Overseas IP Firms

Most of our IP instructions come from firms outside the region acting for international brands. We work the way you need us to: instructions by email with confirmation of receipt and a clear fee estimate before we start; one contact who owns your file rather than a general enquiries inbox; reporting in the format your own client-facing systems expect; and payment in foreign currency where required.

Our Intellectual Property Services Manager, Joana Chee, has been with Cromptons since 2004 and has more than 20 years' experience running trademark and IP instructions.

Why Local Counsel Matters Here

Pacific registries are small, and much of the practice is procedural knowledge rather than published guidance — where to lodge, what a registrar will accept, how long things realistically take, and who to ask when a file stalls. That knowledge is not on a website. It comes from filing in these jurisdictions year after year.

Cromptons has practised in Suva since 1904 and has been ranked by Chambers & Partners from 2021 to 2026.

Start a Matter

Send us the mark, the classes and the jurisdictions, and we will come back with a fee estimate and a realistic timetable.
